What is KURO TO SHIRO?
KURO TO SHIRO is a small atelier created to help you experience the Zen spirit and Japanese sense of beauty found within the simplicity of calligraphy.
The contrast of black ink on white paper, the slow passage of time, the gentle sound of the brush— here, you step away from daily noise and enter a space of ma (emptiness), where you can quietly face your inner self.
Even if this is your first time trying calligraphy, our instructors will guide you carefully in English, so you can relax and enjoy the experience.During your journey, take a moment to pause and connect with the spiritual essence of Japan.
The Experience
Meet at Oshiage Station (Exit A3)
After taking Exit A3 at Oshiage Station, turn right and walk about 20-30 meters. Your instructor will be waiting in front of the 7-Eleven to welcome you.
Character Hunt
During the 10-minute walk to the studio, look for Japanese characters hidden throughout the city. Signs, shop names, noren curtains—please take photos of at least three characters that catch your eye. The walk itself turns into a fun time of discovery!
Arrival & Sharing Time
Once at the studio, everyone will share the characters they photographed and talk about what drew them to those shapes. The guest with the most unique find will receive a small gift! Enjoy this time relaxing with Japanese tea and traditional sweets as you connect with others.
Projection Mapping Experience
Step into a world of images projected across the studio walls. For about five minutes, travel through beautiful Japanese landscapes and immerse yourself in a dreamlike atmosphere. Then, the simple beauty of ink and paper will gently guide you deeper into the art of calligraphy.
Calligraphy Practice
Feel the rhythm and beauty of Japanese characters. From the calming process of grinding your own ink to holding the brush and drawing your first lines, we will guide you step by step. As the highlight of your experience, you will create your own original piece. Choose a word or message that holds special meaning for you or someone you care about.

The KURO TO SHIRO experience takes place in a small atelier that preserves the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese room. Sitting on tatami mats and facing the brush and ink, you will feel as if you have stepped into the heart of Japanese tradition. For those who wish, traditional Japanese clothing is available to wear—perfect for memorable photos. Your English-speaking host is always there to guide you, so even first-time participants can relax and enjoy the experience.
